The decoupage mirror was produced, along with the vase that was painted and glazed, during two different birthday party workshops for my daughter, Kirsty. There are a few places locally that do these parties offering different crafting activities – mostly aimed at young children I might add – but I can thoroughly recommend them for all ages! I have also found that, if you ask about doing one for teenagers or adults, they are only too happy to oblige and adapt it accordingly.
The vase was made at one place which specialises in pottery and we had a choice of pre-made plain white pottery objects to paint. I must admit I wish I had chosen something a bit more interesting than a vase now, like a tea pot maybe, and painted it in bold colours and patterns – maybe polka dots! But that shows the difference in confidence to really have a go at things between then and now really.
The party where both Kirsty and I chose to produce the decoupage mirrors (her 19th) also provided a choice of objects including small boxes and animals as well as the mirror frames, and a wonderful choice of coloured and patterned papers too. Since everyone attending this party were young adults (and of course with myself as the older person who would be around to ‘keep order’!) and it was in the evening when we had the shop to ourselves, they even allowed us to bring a bottle of wine to help the proceedings along!
I think that because both parties/workshops were primarily about having fun we were all able to have a go at something new without worrying about how good the end result was going to be, and that was incredibly freeing!
